Located in the Ben Hill Neighborhood in Southwest Atlanta, the city commissioned an artistic design for a reception plaza. The design deconstructs and abstracts the EMS Star of Life symbol across several elements across the site, including pavers, a bench, lighting, and landscaped areas.
The Star of Life was originally created by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and adapted from the personal Medical Identification Symbol of the American Medical Association, each bar on the “Star of Life” represents one of six EMS functions. The functions include Detection, Reporting, Response, On-Scene Care, Care in Transit, and Transfer to Definitive Care. The rod of Ascelpius is an ancient greek symbol of healing. Widely believed to be a reference to the treatment of guinea worm, it also reminds us of the connection between local and worldwide healthcare.
