Boulevard Granada serves as a connector through the Adams Park community, with the Cascade Road commercial corridor on the northern end and residential enclaves on the southern end. Despite the many residents using it as a walking route, the street was dangerous for pedestrians with disconnected sidewalks and speeding vehicles. Community members expressed that the street lacked anything to promote the uniqueness of the community and noted feeling unsafe crossing the streets in the area. The City of Atlanta collaborated with the community to creatively improve pedestrian safety through the installation of a quarter-mile tactical, artistic walk lane on the southbound side of the street. This connects two existing sidewalks and provides a dedicated and protected space for pedestrians with access to the nearby Cascade Elementary School, local businesses, and MARTA bus stops. Additionally, colorful crosswalk murals were added at the intersections to further delineate pedestrian walking zones.

Bike Walk Macon
Designed for Bike Walk Macon’s “Love Your Streets” Program, the project design was to solve wayfinding and street safety issues at the intersection. These goals were based on community feedback and subtle references to another local organization are hidden in the design.
The design uses motifs from the logo of a local organization to create the heart and signage. An asphalt art crosswalk was painted by the community using examples of mathematical proportion by Pillyr. The heart sign plays with transparency in two different ways: the frosted lens is opaque during the day but glows at night blending reflected color between the two sides and the lettering of the park faces two different directions for readability and allows peeks of the color on the other side.

Colony South Playscape
2019
6’ Wide x 1,300’ Long
Paint, Traffic Dividers, Native Plants
Project Team: David Moore, Daniel Snider
Mural Design: Aysha Pennerman
In collaboration with the Atlanta Office of Immigrant Affairs and Living Walls, The Pillyr Foundation designed a playscape for install at the Colony South community. An impoverished neighborhood, the quality of life has begun to improve with change of ownership in the community and the first elements of a playground bringing families outside keeping eyes on the street. The design takes its inspiration for Aztec god Quetzlcoatl, the winged serpent, whose duality represented the connection between the heavens and the earth. In an effort to maximize play per the budget, the serpentine form of the design creates, slides, jungle gyms and climbing walls which- like the duality of the winged serpent- allows for the kids to dream big in free, creative play, while maintaining a safe, grounded environment.
