For Harbor Coffee as an artistic upgrade to their coffee shop facade. Informed by one of the owner’s history in the Navy, the piece takes inspiration from the way wooden ships are created- bending thinner slats of wood across a curved frame and using tension to create greater structure. In context with the area’s industrial history, another inspiration is the evolution of the Thonet bentwood chair. Beginning as a limited object made by craftsman, the chair was eventually built with standardized bends and was one of the first pieces of furniture to be flat-packed. The evolution of this chair mirrors Harbor Coffee’s desire for a design that meets in between Traditional and more Modern as well as fitting the methods of making contemporary with the building. The piece consists of functional pieces - a grade transition for the door, a planter growing Jasmine up the facade, a trellis providing shade for the window - grouped into a central column.
